Take Action
If you live in the third district of Kansas, email Representative Dennis Moore and ask him to Endorse the Principles of Fairness in Lending. Rep. Moore sits on the House Financial Services Committee and has historically blocked good legislation from getting a hearing. Tell him to side with ordinary Kansans instead of big banks so we can prevent future predatory lending disasters!
If you don't live in KS 3, Endorse the Principles of Lending and stay tuned for more action alerts!

Tell the IRS to regulate Refund Anticipation Loans
April 7, 2008 - Update!
The comment period is now over.
March 28, 2008
The IRS is taking comments about Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs) until April 7, 2008. Click here to submit your comments.
Note: you don’t need to fill in the top part of the form to the IRS. You can use the message below, or compose your own – personal comments will have greater impact!
I am writing to urge the IRS to adopt its proposed rule prohibiting tax preparers from using tax return information to market or refund anticipation loans (RALs) and related products to their clients. The IRS should take every action possible to ban or restrict tax preparers from making RALs, which exploit low-income taxpayers who are entitled to every penny from their hard-earned refunds.

Tell the Fed to hold hearings on the merger of Bank of America and Countrywide
March 28, 2008 - Update!
We did it! AFFIL members and other consumer activists put the pressure on, and the Federal Reserve heard us loud and clear. Thanks to the action of folks like you around the country, the Fed will hold two public hearings about the potential merger of the nation's biggest bank and its biggest mortgage lender, Bank of America and Countrywide. These hearings will give consumer advocates the opportunity to scrutinize the merger and insist that struggling homeowners get the best deal possible if it occurs. Read the Fed’s announcement here.
March 25, 2008
If the Federal Reserve approves the acquisition of Countrywide Financial, Bank of America will become the largest mortgage lender in the country and will acquire nine million new customers. At least a million borrowers who obtained subprime and adjustable rate home mortgages from either Countrywide or one of its subsidiaries are either in foreclosure or behind on their payments. This merger could have a dramatic negative impact on homeowners and our economy.
Fill out the form below to tell the Federal Reserve to closely scrutinize the acquisition of Countrywide by Bank of America, and hold public hearings. Visit our Partner the California Reinvestment Coalition for more information.
